02/25/2001 New Bicycle Shop Opening

On March 10, 2001, a new bike shop will open in Douglas County.  Named Bicycle Outfitters, it's located at the corner of Chapel Hill and Stewart Mill roads -- just behind Arbor Place Mall.  They plan on keeping an impressive inventory of bicycles -- road and mountain models -- in addition to all the clothing and accessories you would expect to find in any good bike shop.  The owner's policy is to keep the store fully staffed with people knowledgeable of bicycles and able to service them.  So Bicycle Outfitters should be a tremendous resource to the area's cycling community.

11/24/2000  Bike Lanes in Douglas County?

In May of this year, I learned that Riverside Parkway would be resurfaced by the end of the year.  I mentioned to Douglasville officials that there was a wide hard surface on both sides of the road already, but that it was too rough to serve as a bike lane.  They said the resurfacing project could be expanded to widen the road and stripe it for bike lanes.

Well the road was resurfaced by the end of October, but it wasn't widened and there are no bike lanes.  While the road's surface is smooth now, it's actually more dangerous for cyclists because the shoulder wasn't raised to meet the new elevation of the road surface.  So if a cyclist should veer off the edge of the newly paved surface, the bicycle's tires could slip out from under him.

If there's a road in Douglas County that you would like to see with bike lanes, be sure to let your elected officials and the planning department know.  Here's how to contact them.

If you are not familiar with the area, Riverside Parkway runs east-west between Fairburn Road and Thornton Road.  The intersection with Fairburn Road is about five miles south of I-20.  It is about 6 miles long and actually continues across Thornton Road leading into Six Flags park.
